GIVE A LASTING GIFT THROUGH THE TRIBUTE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

It’s Christmas time—the season for giving.  It’s also the season that makes us wonder, “What can I give to those at La Reina in a way that will be meaningful?”

Sometimes the best gift you can give to another is to say thank you in a way that leaves a lasting legacy.   One way you can do that is to make a donation to the TRIBUTE SCHOLARSHIP FUND, which allows deserving students the opportunity to continue their education at La Reina.

By helping to educate a student, you are not only touching the present and the future, you are honoring a another person in an enduring way—because the gift of a Catholic education is a gift that lasts a lifetime.

When you donate to the TRIBUTE SCHOLARSHIP FUND, an attractive card will be sent to the honoree, saying that you have made a donation in that person’s name.  Both names will also be listed in the community edition of La Reina Today, with a circulation of 4,000.  Tribute Scholarship Fund envelopes are available in the lobby of the administration building.  Or make an online donation at:  http://www.lareina.com/donations/donate_nowForm.asp   Using the Donation Type drop-down menu, select Tribute Scholarship Fund.

What better way to honor an educator, relative or friend than to contribute to the education of a student?   Thank you and God bless you during these holy seasons of Advent and Christmas.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2010-11 STUDENTS OF THE MONTH!

Each month La Reina honors one junior high and one senior high school student as Students of the Month.  The purpose of the award is to recognize students who exemplify the spirit and philosophy of La Reina High School according to the following criteria:

•Live in the spirit of the Gospel.
•Demonstrate a personal spirituality which promotes reconciliation, justice and respect.
•Value inter-group cooperation and responsibility by participation in church, educational, social and civic groups.
•Appreciate and use the knowledge and wisdom of others.
•Use available opportunities to discover, develop and share the unique gifts God has given her.

The Student of the Month award was established in January, 1988 after a student demonstrated outstanding concern for others.  In a cross country meet, Julie Sanders '89 sacrificed her own lead in the race to guide a runner from competing school who had gone off-course.

Congratulations to the 2010-11 Students of the Month!  Faculty members nominate a student and provide a description of the student's traits which demonstrate her Regent spirit.  Follow this link to learn more about these students.

Attention:   parents, alumnae, alumnae parents and friends of La Reina!  June 30 is the end of the LRHS fiscal year and so last-minute donations to the Legacy & Promise Annual Fund will be deeply appreciated.  Legacy & Promise helps to fund the $1,900 gap between the current tuition and the actual cost to educate each student.    Every La Reina student receives a partial tuition grant.

LRHS BRINGS HOME FIRST PLACE AT CALIFORNIA STATE SCIENCE FAIR

La Reina High School won First Place honors at the California State Science Fair held at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, May 2-3.  Part of the premier, nationwide competition of science projects, the California State Science Fair begins at the school level, with students spending many months developing, completing, and writing their research projects under the purview of their project advisors.  The top projects from the schools then move on to the county level, with the county winners next competing at the state level. This year, there were 1000 participants from 403 schools.

La Reina 8th grader, Arianna Wood, won First Place in the Plant Biology junior division for her project, “Improving the Food Supply and Environment Worldwide: Using Adjuvants to Augment Organic and Conventional Herbicides.”  In her study, she combined different levels of an inexpensive additive with different levels of herbicides in order to discover the most cost-effective method of killing weeds, in order to allow food crops to flourish.  Mrs. Marilyn Usher, La Reina High School science teacher, was the project advisor.  Mrs. Usher was also the project advisor for La Reina 8th grader Alicia Sadowski, who won Third Place in the Environmental Sciences junior division.  In her project titled, “Oil Spills and Dispersants: A Deadly Duo?” she examined the effects of oil dispersants used to treat oil spills.   Both research projects made important findings regarding the global environment and ecosystem.

La Reina is the result of a vision that the Sisters of Notre Dame had more than forty years ago when they founded the school. In the spirit of the Gospel and according to the educational traditions of St. Julie Billiart, spiritual foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame, La Reina provides a Catholic education in which each young woman may discover, develop and share the unique gifts God has given her.

At La Reina, students are given opportunities to grow spiritually, to achieve academic excellence, to develop a global perspective, and to contribute to the community.  The school consistently produces award-winning speech teams and scholarship winners, as well as Tri-Valley League and Ventura County Mock Trial champions.  All students are involved in some type of activity in the community, volunteering in hospitals, religious education programs, and in other community agencies. La Reina graduates are young women with meaningful values, schooled in the tradition of Christian service, willing and able to pursue excellence in reaching their goals.

To bring together outstanding students, their parents and community leaders, the La Reina High School Parent Guild hosts an Evening of Excellence.  Students who receive awards have achieved excellence in a specialized field.   Pioneered by the late Mark Bihn in 1982, this event gives the school and local communities the opportunity to recognize these outstanding students.

All students, parents, alumnae and friends of La Reina are cordially invited to attend.  Seating is limited and the RSVP deadline is Friday, May 6.

CLASS OF 2013 LEADS LEGACY & PROMISE ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN

This message is a reminder about La Reina’s Legacy & Promise annual fund campaign.  This fund helps to close the $1,900 gap between the tuition and the actual cost-to-educate each student.

Last May, parents received an appeal and pledge form.  We are very grateful to those who have already donated.  The current class participation rates are:

Class of 2013 – 34%
Class of 2016 – 32%
Class of 2011 – 31%
Class of 2014 – 26%
Class of 2015 – 25%
Class of 2012 – 19%

Our current goal is to have the highest possible percentage of parent participation in this campaign!   During the weeks of March 14 and 21, parent volunteers will be conducting a Legacy & Promise phone-a-thon to help us reach our goals.  A 100% participation rate would be awesome, demonstrating parents’ generous support for the quality Catholic education that is La Reina’s tradition.   Remember, donations in any amount will make an incredible difference!

Please invest in the Regents through a recurring or one-time gift.   Your donation will help fill the tuition gap, provide financial aid, or support other Regent programs.  To donate online, just follow this link

Thank you for believing in the La Reina legacy.  Your promise of support will bring hope to future generations of Regents.  Be assured of our prayers and good wishes, both now and in the future.  For further information, contact Sr. Lisa Megaffin, Director of Advancement at 805-495-6494, ext. 382 or lmegaffin@lareina.com.

Every year La Reina High School welcomes two exchange students from Liebfrauenschule in Vechta, Germany.  Liebfrauenschule is also sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame, so this exchange is an example of the internationality which characterizes the SND educational heritage.  This program has been in existence for 15 years.  Two host families are needed to “adopt” Annchristin Milke or Leah Hubbermann for four months—from late August through the third week in December, 2011.  Both girls are 15 years old.  Leah likes dancing and soccer and she plays guitar and keyboard. Annchristin studies ballet, plays soccer and is in Student Council. Both girls have studied English for 5 years. SCIENCE RESEARCH ELECTIVE TO OFFER NEW OPPORTUNITIES

During the second semester of 2010-11, a new course, Science Research Elective, will begin.  Research conducted in this class will help students develop digital literacy using 21st century technology.  Students will participate in a class research project on Wolbachia to develop hands-on biotechnology skills.

The Wolbachia precollege project explores the control that a bacterium called Wolbachia exerts on the insects whose current habitat is the hill adjacent to the La Reina campus.  Students will explore advanced scientific topics, such as insect identification (biodiversity), DNA extraction (molecular biology), polymerase chain reaction (molecular biology), DNA fingerprinting (molecular biology), DNA sequence analysis using BLAST (bioinformatics), and correlation of phylogenies (evolution).

According to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, "The Wolbachia Project leverages the scientific expertise of the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachuseets with high schools.  Wolbachia is a wide-spread bacterium that lives symbiotically in at least 20% of the world's insects.  The project's four goals are to:  (1) broaden access of high school students to real-world research; (2) promote nationwide participation in the collection and reporting of new scientific data on bacterial endosymbionts; (3) enhance student interest in and understanding of biology through an integrated lab series; and (4) show students what it is like to be a scientist."

Wish list items 3.8 through 3.12 will provide materials for the students enrolled in this innovative program.  Follow this link to view the wish list:  http://www.lareina.com/development/wishlist.asp
